5 Simple Steps for a Successful Vein Procedure

5 steps for a successful vein procedure

All patients should take some basic precautions before undergoing a vein procedure. Here are some simple steps you can take to ensure a successful outcome.

The most effective treatment for varicose veins is a minimally invasive procedure such as a vein ablation or sclerotherapy. These alternative measures can provide you with lasting relief from your symptoms and minimize the likelihood of a recurrence, making them an ideal solution for most patients.

Like any medical treatment, however, procedures for varicose veins do require some preparation from the patient to ensure their success. Fortunately, the following steps should help you protect your veins in the days before your procedure and ensure a successful outcome:

1. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can exacerbate inflammation in your veins, constricting them further. Remember that your blood is composed mostly of water; your circulatory system can’t function properly without adequate hydration.

2. Take Medications in Advance

If you need to take a sedative before your procedure, be sure to do so at least an hour in advance to minimize the risk of complications. If you will be sedated, have a friend or relative drive you to and from your appointment.

3. Bring Appropriate Clothing

Since your veins should be as relaxed as possible before and during the procedure, wear loose fitting clothing to minimize the pressure on your veins. Note that any undergarments may be stained by the iodine solution used to prep the procedure area.

To promote circulation in the treated veins, you’ll also want to keep a pair of compression stockings on hand to put on after your procedure.

4. Provide Necessary Documentation

Some insurance providers require a referral or other documentation before covering the cost of a vein procedure. Bring any appropriate paperwork to your vein specialist as soon as possible.

5. Don’t Wear Cosmetics

The final step applies only to patients who are undergoing sclerotherapy, a minimally invasive procedure during which a vein specialist injects a foaming chemical (the sclerosant) into the affected vein. Since makeup, deodorant, cologne, lotions, and powders can all interfere with the sclerosant, you should not apply any of them to the area being treated.
